If you have a kiddo that's not a big talker you will need to learn to be very specific with your questions to them about school. You can't just ask "How was school?". If you do you won't find out much. I have started asking questions like the ones below and have found they work much better. Pick a few and see what your kids have to say about their day!
1. Did anyone do anything funny today?
2. What did you eat for lunch?
3. Who had the best food for lunch today?
4. If one of your friends could be the teacher for the day who would you want it to be and why?
5. If you could be the teacher what would you teach?
6. Who did you play with at recess and what did you play?
7. What did the other kids do at recess?
8. Did anyone upset you today?
9. Did you help anyone today? How?
10. Did you read any books today?
11. What color shoes did your teacher have on?
12. Was anyone absent today?
13. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
14. What is your favorite part of your classroom?
15. What is the most important rule in your classroom?
16. Are there any school supplies you need that you wished you had at school?
17. Did anyone do anything nice for you today?
18. Is there anything you wish you had done differently today?
19. What did (insert best friend's name) talk about today?
20. Does anyone in your class have a nickname?
21. Who did something fun over the weekend/winter break/spring break?
22. Where is the coolest place at your school?
23. What did you learn about at school that you would like to learn more about at home?
24. Is anyone in your class really good at something? What is it?
25. Did anyone tell any jokes today?
26. Does your class have anything planned that you are excited about?
27. What is something you did with your pencil today?
28. Did you have any special visitors or helpers in your classroom today?
29. How would you rate your day on a scale from 1-10?
30. When did you feel proud of yourself today?
