Cultural Pass and Summertime Virtual Activities From The LFPL

June 10, 2020

My kids and I have been having fun doing many of the virtual activities available with the 2020 Cultural Pass! Be sure to sign up for the Louisville Free Public Library's Summer Reading Program and the Cultural Pass!

Some of the challenges that are being offered are:

  • Actors Theatre will teach you how to make stage-quality fake blood at home and you will hear from the Actors Theatre props team to learn about designing and building a remote-controlled rover.
  • Asia Institute - Crane House is offering virtual demonstrations on origami paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture.
  • Take a virtual trip to the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, the Kentucky Derby Museum, the KMAC Museum, Locust Grove, the Louisville Zoo, and more!
  • Learn all about bonsai with the Waterfront Botanical Gardens.
  • Learn how to make a paddlewheel boat of your very own, just like the Belle of Louisville.
  • Enjoy a braille writing demonstration and then braille writing activities with the Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind.

These are just a few examples. There are over 50 different activities to try out, all for FREE!

The library is also offering virtual storytimes and a virtual STEAM Club every Thursday at 11:00 am.

Check out their YouTube channel to see the older virtual storytimes and the virtual STEAM Club

You can search the library's digital library for ebooks, audiobooks, and comics, and graphic novels for kids too. The library is also offering free access to TumbleBookLibrary, TumbleMath, and Kanopy Kids!

If you need to utilize the "Read It Down" Program it is also available this summer!

The Library's Read It Down program allows children and teens to reduce library fines just by reading. Participants read or listen to books of their choosing. The more you read, the less you owe.

Preschool – 5th grade: every 15 minutes equals $2.00 off your overdue fines.
6th – 12th grade: every 30 minutes equals $2.00 off your overdue fines.

Log the time you spend reading and then call 574-1611 and report the amount of time spent reading. Have questions about the Read it Down program? Call (502) 574-1611.
