We have a winner *Giveaway* Win Free Registration to Sell, $20 Credit!

February 23, 2023

Suzette Decker began her venture as Kentuckiana’s consignment guru 26 years ago, but she didn’t plan to launch an enterprise: she simply wanted to find cute, inexpensive clothes for her then three-year-old daughter and infant son. Along with her mother, Peggy, she asked other neighborhood moms to join her; 25 participated. With her husband, Mark, hanging closet rods from their garage ceiling, Suzette organized clothing by size and gender as you see in stores.

The KidStuff Sale has grown by leaps and bounds over the ensuing years. A sale that could originally fit in Suzette’s driveway and garage now requires over 32,000 square feet of space in the Triple Crown Pavilion in Jeffersontown, Kentucky. Several times a year, Suzette and her staff, along with an army of motivated moms, fill that space with every kind of child-related item you can think of: toys, clothing, games, puzzles, books, furnishing, sporting goods, costumes, and more.

For a traditional event, moms tag their clothing (or pay a fee for KidStuff Sale staff to tag items), bring them to the event space, and for four days, those items are sold to the public. KidStuff Sale is a win for sellers or shoppers. On average, moms who consign earn around $400 for 150 sold items. Moms (or dads or grandparents) who shop save a bundle and can find some real steals on Discount Day, when most items are marked down to 50 percent.

Two years ago, Suzette, Mark, and the KidStuff Sale team moved into virtual, or online, sales as a result of COVID when people were scared to gather in large groups. In a virtual sale, moms who consign upload pictures of their items, along with details and prices, but they only bring items that have sold to the venue where they are sorted by KidStuff staff. Shoppers purchase and pay for items using an online storefront and then pick up their items at a designated time.

The New Albany Virtual Sale starts March 9th at 5PM!

What Suzette found is that a lot of moms actually prefer the virtual consignment format. “There are a lot of families who don’t have time to participate in the in-person sale or come and shop the sale; it doesn’t work for their family’s schedule or they live too far away,” she says. Plus, despite the availability of social media selling (through Facebook Marketplace and similar venues), some moms simply feel more comfortable and confident shopping with KidStuff Sale, a name they can trust. There is no negotiating prices, online chatting, or missed porch pick-ups to worry about.

The latest exciting new chapter for the KidStuff Sale is the launch of a virtual sale in Florida, which will happen in April 2023. Exploring a new market feels a little daunting, but it promises a great new opportunity. The Suncoast area is completely unfamiliar with KidStuff Sale and all the benefits of consignment selling and shopping online. “Having lived in the Suncoast area as a young adult and now returning frequently to visit family and friends in the area, we are excited to explore having a virtual event there. We have a number of longtime Kidstuff clients from Kentuckiana who live in the area and have expressed the desire for something like this online platform,” Suzette says.

We have a winner! Congratulations to Whitney Buente, happy shopping!
