April 26, 2015

Do you ever want an easy and fun way for you and your family to start eating healthier, while at the same time supporting a great, local business? This week I want to tell you about a wonderful opportunity to get your spot reserved for a share in a CSA with Rootbound Farm. Rootbound Farm is entering it's 6th year of growing high-quality chemical-free produce and raising lamb. They are a certified organic farm located in Oldham County and grow a wide range of market crops for local upscale restaurants, farmers markets, grocery stores, and their CSA program. What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a popular way for you to buy local, seasonal food directly from the farmer.

As a member you will receive a weekly "share" of the season's harvest from June through October. It is a very nice way to support our local farms and economy. You know where your food is coming from, and you get to eat better. Each week you receive a collection of produce, typically a 3/4 bushel box of 7-10 items. The produce is often harvested the same day you receive it! And that's where the fun comes in!

I love getting my box each week, opening it and seeing what i got. There is always a little bit of excitement to it just like Christmas :)
It has been a great learning experience for both me and my kids. I have learned to cook and taste so many new things that I wouldn't have taken a chance with otherwise. And my kids love it too. It is so much more interesting than picking things out at Kroger. My son always wants to know what everything is and what it tastes like. It gets him way more curious to try something than he normally would be about new foods.

As a member of the CSA you'll also have access to on-farm events like farm tours, potluck, and special events like their "Meet the Baby Lambs Day" in May. It's a great way to develop a relationship with the farmer who grows your food and learn more about how food is grown.

There are lots of different pickup times and locations, and ways to pay. If you pay the full price up front you even get a 5% discount! You will receive a box every week beginning the week of June 1st and end the week of October 26th. They don't offer half shares at this time but you are encouraged to partner with friends and neighbors to split a share, or they can help match you with someone who might want to split a share too.
These spots will fill up so contact them soon to claim your share!
